FORD 8N

When we bought our place in Chicago Park we decided that we needed a tractor as there was one there when we first looked at the property.   I found this one down in Morgan Hill, Ca.  I didn't know much about tractors. It looked ok, and seemed to run all right.    After I got it home and had some time to familiarize myself with it I got an education.  It was pretty tired.  I set about rebuilding it.  I was totally amazed at the Ford dealer when the parts man began setting out everything to rebuild the engine. This is a 1948 Tractor, I was rebuilding the engine in 1990. The rebuild kit even included plugs and points! The man looked up from his work and asked what size sleeves I wanted. I must have still had the look of amazement on my face as he had to ask me again.  I told him I didn't know, as I hadn't measured them. I was dumfounded that he would have anything for a tractor that old, much less everything!  When I got back to the shop I got the numbers he needed and we put together the complete rebuild kit. The exhaust manifold was broken, I thought I'd ask the dealer if anything was available before I tried repairing it.  The man said "in stock" and the price was attractive enough to not bother repairing my broken one.  The new manifold was made, are you ready for this?  In Taiwan!  Ford produced somewhere around 400 thousand N series tractors.  According to some tractor aficionados, half of them are still in service. Amazing.       BW
